Bennion Beach Blaze
Wow, oh Wow!!!! I came so close to not heading out tonight as I really didn’t think the sunset was going to be any good. How wrong was I? I decided to head out anyway to Bennion Beach, its a familiar spot and I feel grounded there.
I was trying out a few new in camera techniques, playing around when I saw the sunset start to really fire up. Well off to work I went and I was blown away at just how intense, insane and amazing the sunset was.
So glad I went out tonight!
Thanks,
Jamie
More Wave Sliding
The other day I headed down to Trigg Beach to get some more photos of the surfers cutting up the waves. I wanted to try and emulate a pervious shot I had done of a surfer at Trigg Beach but I’m pretty sure I’ve managed to do a better job this time. I wanted to the surfer to less blurry than he was last time, so I upped the shutter speed and I was a lot happier with the result. Both the surfer and the waves are a little more defined which sits well with me.
Again with this shot I find myself focusing more on the motion and emotion of the surfer and the wave than on all the details of the photo itself. I can feel the strength of the wave and the freedom the surfer gets from riding it. I think I’ll keep tinkering with this style of surf photography for a little while longer yet.

Life Moves Fast – Time To Slow Down
I’ve really enjoyed these past couple of photos because they remind me that time just moves way too fast, and that if we take the time to slow down we can see some really interesting things.
Things that are hidden in our mad rush to get from one place to another as fast as possible, and from trying to fit as many unimportant things in to our lives as possible.
So this weekend, slow down, take a deep breath, have a look around and enjoy yourself.

Trigg Beach
Hello Everyone,
Can you believe that Christmas is almost here? Its such a cliche thing to say but I can’t believe a whole year has just flown past yet again! Its exciting to find out what 2011 has in store for us.
Recently I headed down to Trigg Beach to capture a sunset as it had been a really hot and humid day and there were plenty of clouds about as well, which normally makes for a spectacular sunset and I certainly wasn’t disappointed on this occasion.
The moment I got to the beach I just knew that we were going to be in for a treat. The sun was already throwing up some awesome colours an hour before the sun went down, so I just started shooting away and having a blast. Don’t you just love it when you’re having fun and all your photos just seem to fall into place?
Have a great week!
Thanks,
Jamie Paterson
Wave Warrior
Just been listening to Jack Johnson and G Love tonight and it got me into a surfing kind of mood. Now I don’t surf any more but I still like getting down to the beach every couple of weeks and pretend to be a surf photographer for a few hours. Any way back to the story I started doing a little tinkering tonight for fun and I think I’ve come up with a pretty cool surfing image.
Now back to my laid back surfing music session. Have a great weekend everyone.
Thanks,
Jamie Paterson
Trigg Beach Waves
After hearing Matthew Saul and Mark Stothard talking about how good the surf was going to be on Sunday I couldn’t help myself and headed down to Trigg Beach to watch the waves come thumping through. Its always heaps of fun and I managed to get a few decent shots as well. Thanks for the tip you two, is there a better way to spend a Sunday morning?
Imagine being able to fly around the world getting surf shots like this!

Bennion Beach Sunset
Seems like today is the day for posting with Christian and Mark competing for the most amount of posts put up in an hour! This photo was from last Saturday. What do you do when its pouring with rain? Head down to the beach of course. To get this shot I quite literally had to find a big rock to hide behind and duck out and setup and then shoot in between rain squalls. I’d usually get a couple of minutes between each rain shower, you could just see the wall of rain coming screaming across the water and you’d have about 30 seconds before it hit and hit hard.
After this shot I decided to head back to the car and get home and stand in front of the heater to thaw out. Hope you guys enjoy it. All comments appreciated.
Thanks,
Jamie Paterson
Surf Like An Egyptian
When I saw this surfing shot on my computer after my Trigg Beach shoot on Saturday, I thought it was really funny, it really reminded me of that song ‘Walk like an Egyptian” by the Bangles this is exactly the same pose they were in during their music video.
Anyhow, in the past 18mths I’ve been out shooting heaps and have heard heaps of stories from you guys, the most dramatic one being Christian’s story about stalkers , but I’ve never experienced it myself until Saturday. I was quite happy shooting on Trigg Beach when this guy came out of the water with really bloodshot eyes and I reckon high as kite still and started yelling at me asking if I wanted him to catch a real wave. I laughed and said that would help me out heaps, which he found quite funny. He then decided that he was going to be my personal bouncer / photography director and started to yell at people if they got to close to me and yelling at the guys in the surf to ride good waves so that I could get better photos. Needless to say I was totally speechless and beetroot red by this stage. I mumbled that my card was now full and that I really appreciated his help in getting some surf photographs and started to make my way back up to the carpark. He started to follow me and I was thinking “70-200mm you’ve been a great lens to me, here is your chance to go out like a hero if he tries anything in the carpark”. Fortunately someone else distracted him on the way back up to the carpark and he started to yell and bark at him instead.
So with my first ‘weirdo’ experience under my belt hopefully I can now shoot in peace without being disturbed again! Why do they always seem to strike just as you”ve got your best photography lined up?
Have any of you guys had the full stalker experience as yet?
Thanks,
Jamie Paterson
Bennion Beach Streaks Pt 2
Hi Everyone,
Saturday morning saw me down at Bennion Beach once again trying to capture water movement. I got lucky as there was some big waves that came thundering through which made it easy to capture the water movement that I was after. I’m stoked as well because this time I didn’t get soaked up to my waist by a rogue wave! Afterwards I drove down to Trigg Beach to watch all the guys surfing and getting thumped by the huge surf. I think I could easily do another three of four shoots at this beach to capture all the angles I’m after. 🙂
What did everyone else capture this weekend?

Trigg Beach Tango
Hi Everyone,
Well after checking out www.swellnet.com.au I saw that today was going to have some pretty decent waves and that the wind was going to be offshore for most of the day so I hit Trigg Beach at 8am this morning and obviously the word was already out as a massive crew was packing out the lineup. I captured some awesome shots with a number of guys getting heaps of air, I’ll save them for later. If this is the sort of waves we are getting in autumn I can’t wait to see what Winter throws at us once the sand banks built up.
Trigg Beach Tunnels
Hi Everyone,
Well Saturday saw me heading down to Trigg Beach to capture some more surfing shots as I knew the surf was up but also knew there was no landscape action happening here in Perth that morning. I got down there early and it was already very crowded at the point and I’m not surprised though as there was a decent and consistent swell coming through so I managed to snap quite a few good surf photos for the short time that I was there. There were some mini barrels happening at Trigg which was cool to see, even cooler was that a few people managed to sneak into some of them.
Has anyone else here tried Surf or Wave photography?
Its stacks of fun sitting on the beach watching the surfers, surf and seeing all the activity on the beach. Not sure that I could do it for hours on end, day in and day out though.
Thank You for stopping by,
Jamie Paterson
