Cottesloe Beach Colours
Ummm what more can I say? This had to be the best sunset of the year and for once I was there. I was there and I was fully loaded ready to capture what ever unfolded.
To have this mind blowing sunset unfold before me was the most amazing bonus. I couldn’t be happier. 🙂
The sunset was so intense that I had to desaaturize a lot of the reds in this photo.

Cottesloe Beach Clouds
What more can I say? I just love shooting Cottesloe Beach. Probably because I spent a lot of my youth there and there is probably some truth to the rumour that I may have undertaken one maybe two Sunday sessions at the nearby hotels. 🙂
What really struck me about Cottesloe on this particular day was the different levels and colours of clouds. It was like Pro Heart had just loaded up a paint gun and splatted the sky with white. !

Summer Days
Don’t you just love Summer days like these? When its been hot and humid all day and you just know that you’re going to see an amazing sunset?
I think we all do and of course the best thing about days like these are taking a quick dip in the water once the sun has set to cool down. I could spend hours down at the beach in the evenings just chilling out.
What about you? What is your favourite thing to do on a hot summer evening? After you’ve taken your photos of course.

Cottesloe Beach Hues
On Sunday I was checking out the awesome clouds and thought there was no way that I could miss out on that action. I headed out to Cottesloe Beach to see what sort of photos I could get. It became really evident as sunset was arriving that all the clouds above Cottesloe were very qucikly burning off, which was a real shame as the clouds 30mins previously were just amazing.
Fortunately, I had checked out these rocks out about an hour before sunset and they had looked pretty cool, so I quickly scrambled down to them and started to snap away. In hindsight I’m actually pretty glad I was forced into this location as I’m really pleased with the way the shot turned out. Hopefully you guys do as well.

Cottesloe Beach Blur
Last Friday afternoon it was really windy and blustery but I thought I would head out to Cottesloe Beach anyway and see what I could come up with. I decided to use the good old Lee Big Stopper to try and add some drama to the image as it was still early afternoon. As you would expect there was virtually no one on the beach as it was just so cold.
I know its not your typical Cottesloe Beach photo with lots of blue sky and people running around everywhere but I really wanted one that showed how dramatic and empty this place can be during winter. I think I passed the challenge, hopefully you guys do as well.

Yes its another shot of North Cottesloe! I guess it just goes to how diverse and different this place can be if you take the time to get to know it. I like this shot as it seems really calming and relaxing which is exactly how North Cottesloe makes me feel when I’m there.

I quickly ducked down to North Cottesloe tonight to try and grab a few shots. I wasn’t holding my breath as I didn’t think there would be too much colour around but fortunately I was pleasantly surprised. Hope you all like it. 🙂

North Cottesloe Last Light
Well its no secret that North Cottesloe is my metro version of Injidup Beach. No matter how many times I think I’m going to shoot somewhere else I nearly always end up here. Not sure why, there are plenty of other great beaches, but this one just has the ‘x factor’ for me.
Great little waves, great rocks and quite often I can get really close to the action without getting too wet, which I like to do.
This is a really simple composition but as we are all learning, quite often less is more. I hope you all enjoy it.

North Cottesloe
North Cottesloe has to be one of the best and most interesting metro beaches to shoot, its always so much fun being down there. In this shot I tried following the movement of the wave whilst also getting some detail in the shot and I’m pretty happy with the result.
To get this shot I held the shutter open for about 2secs and then panned from right to left to capture the waves movement I did that for about 1.5secs and then for the last .5sec just kept the camera still so that the camera would record some of the detail and not totally blur it all. I’ve being trying to work on a compromise between totally blurred and totally sharp so that the viewer focuses on the movement and emotion within the photo but can still see where the photo was taken.
I think this photo manages to achieve that.

North Cottesloe Waves
Last night I decided to hit Perth metro beaches. I was determined not to end up at North Cottesloe beach as I had shot it so many times before, but as usual I ended up at you guessed it…… North Cottesloe. I do love it down there.
The rocks and their formations are simply awesome and you can stand right out on the edge of them without getting too wet, though I did cop a soaking last night.
For me one of the best things about winter is that the North Cottesloe magic that has been hiding all summer is revealed. Exquisite rocks that were covered by sand are now exposed and facing the full force of the ocean after spending almost six months in hibernation, protected by a blanket of sand.
Winter would have to be a seascape photographers best friend.

Pay To Photograph At Cottesloe Beach?
Can you believe it? Soon there is a chance we might have to pay to take photographs like this at Cottesloe Beach? Click on the link if you don’t. I must admit I stayed pretty quiet about Ken Duncan’s campaign to tackle the requirement of permits at certain areas over East and I certainly never thought we’d be facing the same issue here. All I want to do is go and take photographs at places like this and not be made to feel like I’m doing something wrong.
What can we do about it here in Perth?

Cottesloe Beach
Hi Crew,
I hope you’ve all had a great weekend. Have I jumped on the black and white bandwagon with this shot? Certainly not! I see things in colour and in the past have converted the odd photo to black and white when the composition and light was good but the colour wasn’t.
In this case though I always saw this Cottesloe Beach shot in black and white for some reason, perhaps its because of Brett Morgan’s latest photos. Either way I’m glad I saw this one in black and white as it really works. Now should I rock Mark’s boat and do a third post for the day? I think so.

Cottesloe Beach Groyne
I decided this afternoon to head down to Cottesloe Beach again despite the heavy rain and huge seas slamming into the groyne. I always knew that I was going to get soaked so I just wore an old jumper, shorts and put my camera into an underwater housing. I’m glad I did, here is a shot of me just about to be soaked with the spray of a wave hitting the groyne. It was heaps of fun though the few people who were there looked at me as if I was crazy. Yes I did get soaked form head to toe. To be honest it was pretty uplifting being sprayed by the ocean, like new life was being splashed onto me.

Cottesloe Beach Steps
Hi Guys,
Here is another photo of Cottesloe Beach from Saturday afternoon. I was just tinkering trying to get different shots of Cottesloe Beach because lets face it almost every angle of this place has been covered. For good reason though, its a great place to be and a great place to shoot. I think winter is just as much fun to shoot Cottesloe as summer as you can get some really dramatic images even without the colour of a summer sunset.
I didn’t realise it at the time but it looks like Dylan was just down the road shooting the same sunset as I was. I hope you’re all having a great start to the week, I know I sure am. 🙂

Stormy Cottesloe Beach
Well I wasn’t going to go out tonight. You all know the usual story, too cold, too windy and its raining. Something told me to just get out there and shoot. Let’s face it, if you’re not there and the sunset fires up then its a shoot you’ll never get back. So I headed down to Cottesloe Beach and I just felt that it was the place to be, I drove up to Trigg Beach, Bennion Beach and North Beach before I headed back down to Cottesloe. I should’ve just stuck with my original decision! I got so many interesting shots this afternoon and I can’t wait for Sunday afternoon as the waves are meant to be huge, so guess where I’ll be Sunday afternoon! 🙂

North Cottesloe Sunset
Don’t you just love an awesome sunset in winter? The colours are still quite strong though not always as intense as summer and the water is always so moody. I managed to capture this shot at North Cottesloe which if you haven’t discovered it yet is an amazing place for seascape photography. There is normally heaps of interesting rocks and plenty of waves hitting them as well. The other great thing about North Cottesloe is that the waves rarely make it past the rocks so you don’t tend to get too wet when taking photos here.
I remember last winter when I was taking shots at Bennion Beach. It was in the middle of winter and I was taking photos when a rouge wave came thumping through. I just managed to grab my tripod and hold it above my head before it hit me. The wave was that strong I lost one of my thongs. It was so funny, all these people were looking at me when I got back up to the carpark. I was drenched from my waist down on a cold day with only one thong on! I did eventually manage to get the other thong back.

Cottesloe Beach @ 43 Degrees
Hi Everyone,
Its really rare for me to post an unedited landscape photograph but I just couldn’t help myself with this one. I was down at Cottesloe Beach when it was 43 degrees and it was stinking hot! It took me 10mins to get to the beach as I couldn’t park near Cottesloe as all the car parks were full.
This is a 10 stitch image of Cottesloe Beach. If I didn’t have all my camera gear with me I would definetely have just jumped into the water myself. Any way back to processing the image.
