Down By Canning River
I’ve been sitting on this photo for months, its really captivated me, mainly because Canning River has been such a huge part of my life growing up. Growing up I certainly always appreciated going down there during the summer months and going swimming at Deepwater Point. I was a Sea Scout at Deepwater point and spent pretty much every weekend of my youth down at Deepwater Point. At 15 I was no longer elible for Scouts so for a year I stopped going there.
Then I discovered rowing and for the next four years I spent pretty much six to seven days a week twice a day on the river before I became a submariner in the Navy. Before I left it was such a rare event to see Dolphins in the river.
When I left the Navy one of the first things I did was rejoin the rowing community. I was amazed at how much cleaner the river was, we saw dolphins at least twice a week whilst out rowing and lots of Pelican’s and Shags feeding on huge schools of fish. It was good to see that efforts to clean up the river were working.
I’ve spent the past few weeks just riding around the river and remembering all the great times I’ve had down there and capturing photos of the area, so stand by for more photos from this area over the coming months.
Have any of you guys tried to capture your childhood history via the photography skills you now have? As photographers we are lucky as we can document our lives as we see it.
I hope you all have a fantastic Australia Day.

Hi Jamie,
This is a great image. The boats are placed nicely either side of that one tree trunk, and there is so much nice detail in that tree. It looks quite well processed also.
Maybe one thing I’d think about doing is dodging the tree where it gets quite dark towards the top of the photo, just to bring out some more of tha detail, and possible darkening the clouds in the sky. I’m just being picky here – it’s really good as it is 😉
Definitely one of your best from your recent posts, in my opinion.
Have a good time in Tasmania and good luck with getting some neat shots over there!

Thanks Beau. It was an amazing sunset here in Hobart tonight. Selected at least four good spots for the morning.

Hi Jamie
Nice image and reminded my of my youth growing up in that area. I posted an image that I took last year of the old jetty up the road near the ski area.
Those paper bark trees must have been there for ever.

Hi Jamie,
Nice work mate…you and I have more in common than you think! I grew up in Ullapool Rd, went to the same Sea Scouts at Deep Water point and also went skiing there for many years as a kid as well!!

Hi Pete
Thanks for that mate. It’s pouring down here at the moment in Cradle Mountain. Going to take some miracle processing to get anything here.

Great read Jamie. Tree looks like it`s out of Lord of the Rings! For me just getting back to Karijini being in a beautiful natural environment evokes that childhood spirit that I grew up with.
